International Summer School opens!

Well, we are struggling to keep up with this Blog at the moment, we have to admit. Summer session is in full flow, with a group of principals and teachers from Baku, Azerbaijan taking a refresher teacher training course, School 220 from Baku developing their English languages, guests from Iran, Libya, Kazakhstan, China, Turkmenistan and Russia, and many more on the way, not least through our Summer AISEC project. We'll be doing our best to keep you in touch as we go!

Turtle Conservation Project

The long, sandy beaches of Northern Cyprus are nesting grounds for the green and loggerhead turtles. Threatened by development, pollution and other hazards across the Mediterranean, EMU is engaged in an ongoing project to preserve these beautiful and valuable animals. This summer, a unique opportunity is available to visiting students to take part in the conservation project and develop skills, knowledge and awareness of environmental issues. All you need to apply is the willingness to be involved, and a basic knowledge of English.

Programme Includes:

 Seminars on environmental issues.

 Hands-on work with the turtles and their nesting grounds from 21.00 to 02.00 in the evenings.

 Training in underwater diving.

 Cultural and historical excursions.

 Accommodation and food provided.

 Supplementary English class.

 Cost: 600 USD per fortnight

 Optional extra English classes available at cost

Scholarships at Vienna University of Technology

The Vienna PhD School of Informatics involves an intense period of supervised study and research, culminating in the submission of a thesis. The duration of the PhD School is three years. The degree is awarded to candidates who, through original investigation, make a distinct and significant contribution to knowledge in their field of specialisation.

The Vienna PhD School of Informatics is an international PhD School, funded by the Vienna University of Technology (TU Vienna), the City of Vienna and private sponsors. PhD students for this full-time programme are recruited world-wide, all courses are held in English.

The PhD School’s curriculum covers the main research areas of the Faculty of Informatics. In addition, it may also imply cooperation with other TU Vienna faculties. The school is designed to facilitate the integration of industry, either by defining joint research issues, by offering workplaces (with well-defined research related tasks) during summer breaks, or by sponsoring.

The objective of this PhD curriculum is to provide an environment that encourages students to contribute to the advancement of technology through independent creative research. One objective of doing a doctoral degree is to become an independent researcher, capable of generating, pursuing and communicating novel research ideas. Therefore, students will become involved in research activities as soon as possible.

Scholarships

Each year a maximum of 15 students will be awarded a scholarship amounting to

EUR 1.000 per month, to cover the cost of living. Travel expenses for e.g. attending conferences or summer schools will also be covered, upon approval.

3rd Annual Children's Festival

A group of instructors from the SFL are participating in the 3rd Annual Children's Festival which will be held on Saturday, 09th of April 2011 in the walled city to collect donations for a 3 years old cancer patient who is the son of a colleague! The donations which will be collected during this event will completely go towards the fight against cancer!

The instructors are planning to have a food stall with some delicious cakes, desserts, cookies,pastries etc.They will have some activities for children, as well. Hope you can participate in the event on the 9th, and show your support for the cause.

This weekend EMU was honoured to host his Royal Highness Okoya Adewale Isreal of Lagos, Nigeria and his wife. Hi, I am Mahesh Shanthappa from Bangalore, India.

I am doing MBA from National Institute of Management Excellence, Bangalore, India, and my specialization is marketing and finance. I came through AIESEC for internship as it is a part of my academics.

AIESEC Eastern Mediterranean University is actively involving in the international exchange program and giving great international learning opportunities to

students. When I came to know about this project, I happily accepted this offer. Why I chose this project because it is very relative to my specialization.

It is first time for me going abroad, so even I also did research in internet about North Cyprus. First thing I felt North Cyprus is amazing place and also my other friends who already been here, they told me citizens are very pleasant.

When I came here what I expected about North Cyprus and citizens was same as it is what I got info before. And also university students are very helpful and friendly; they only came forward and

spoke with us, shared information about University and place.

My Internship is to Promote the Eastern Mediterranean University in India, for this I have to know about University Departments and how it’s giving quality education and difference from other University,

During my internship:

On 23/02/2011 I attended some lectures in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and also met some professors; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hasan Demirel (Vice Chairman) is very supportive and gave brief introduction about their department, later I attended the lecture of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aykut HOCANIN (Chairman), I was really impressed by the way of his teaching.

One thing which I noticed in EMU, it has a separate website for EMU students, lecturers and also parents, it has transparency in keeping notes, course model, records of attendance and marks. This is useful for students as well as parents also!

Later Prof. Dr. Hasan Demirel explained us about Electrical and Electronic course, for me it is quite different from Indian education system, EMU students can also choose subjects (Elective) along with the Engineering like Social & Behavioral, Arts & Humanities.

I felt it is most important for student, Engineer means he not engine!!!, he must know something about social, culture and arts, one good thing is University given freedom to choose their elective subjects according to student’s interest. And it is nothing wrong to learn in under graduate level.

I am Aravind from Bangalore, Karnataka, India. I am pursuing my MBA at National Institute Of Management Excellence. My specialization is Human Resource. I have come to Eastern Mediterranean University for internship through AIESEC as it is part of University Curriculum.

I When AIESEC gave me this project I was really impressed with the project and I accepted it. This was the right choice made by me.

I was very much excited as it was my first trip abroad. When I landed at Istanbul airport I could not believe my eyes. As it was very beautiful and huge airport. It was a very happy time for me because I had 5-6 hours of waiting time at airport. So I walked through airport seeing things and I was really amazed and impressed with it.

When I landed finally at Ercan Airport I was really thrilled and it was very cold outside. As I entered The EMU campus I was really surprised for the reception I got from AIESEC and my fellow teammates.

Today I also had opportunity to meet Dr. Hasan Demirel ,Vice Chairman Of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department and also Mr. Aykut Hocanin, Chairman Of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department. I also got opportunity to attend Lecture of Aykut about AM, PM, FM and Digital Modulated Systems. I was very impressed with his style of teaching. He made much complicated formulas so simple and easy. It was a great privilege for me to meet the persons and I am very thankful for EMU for providing such great opportunities and I hope there will be few more opportunities to meet the professors of different departments. I was also impressed with the E-attendance system provided. I was surprised to see the website which has complete information of all courses and modules and also the question papers provided. Through this there is a transparency between students, Parents and Universities.

One thing that surprised me is that the grade the students had got i.e, GPA as this is not used in India more.

Cyprus is a wonderful country with lots of scenic places and beaches to enjoy.. I am really excited to see the famous places at Cyprus during my stay. I am interested in knowing the history and culture of Cyprus. I am really looking forward to promote EMU in India to my best and bring Indian students to EMU.

I had not seen any university so big and I am hoping to take a full glimpse of it before I go back to india. As I saw there are many students across 68 countries and it is very well diversified. It is very important for me to know the culture of other countries. I also had opportunity to meet Chinese students. It was very good talking to them and I had culture exchange. I had also been to the presentation made by Chinese and I really enjoyed it.

I am an exchange participant through Aiesec. The purpose of choosing this project was, as I am pursuing my Mba program in India ( National Institute of Management Excellence) and my major specialization was HR with Marketing, As internship was a part of my Global Mba program, I saw Aiesec as a platform for my future development. As this project was related to Marketing the Eastern Mediterranean University, I had no hesitation in rejecting it. I thought it would be great if I go there and market it.
I am from India and it is very famous for its historical back ground and has many cultures. India is the world's second most populous nation (after China). Its ethnic composition is complex, but two major strains predominate: the Aryan, in the north, and the Dravidian, in the south. India is a land of great cultural diversity, as is evidenced by the enormous number of different languages spoken throughout the country. Although Hindi (spoken in the north) and English are used officially, more than 1,500 languages and dialects are spoken. The Indian constitution recognizes 15 regional languages (Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu).

1st day when I landed in Northern Cyprus and was heading towards Eastern Mediterranean University, I was wondering how students, faculties and Aiesecers in the campus would accept us, but when I reached EMU campus, I was stunned to see the response and I could diversify with all of them here. As there are thousands of students who come across the world from 68 nations its very important for me to know their culture n traditions. I met many students like Chinese, Nigerians and many students from Turkey and got to know a few things about them. As I am from India and like many Indians even I am very open minded and think everything in a positive way and it will be very helpful for me to market EMU(Eastern Mediterranean University) in India.

The TOEFL IBT exam is used by EMU and many universities internationally as a measure of English Language Proficiency. At EMU:

75 on TOEFL IBT exempts students on 4-year undergraduate programmes from study in the English Preparatory School.

80 on TOEFL IBT exempts postgraduate students from the compulsory postgraduate courses.

74-79 on TOEFL IBT exempts postgraduate students from the compulsory first semester postgraduate English course, ENGL 513.

TOEFL IBT may secure your entry for a course of further study at many institutions, particularly in the USA. And of course, it will also give you a good idea of your real level of English and how much you may need to improve your language skills.

The codes of all courses have been changed to provide a more logical structure to our curriculum. The courses on offer are now as follows:

Compulsory Courses

ENGL 511: Intensive English for Post-graduate Students

This 20 hour weekly course is for students who score beneath 30 on the EMU Proficiency Test and who have only limited English language skills.

ENGL 513: Academic English for Postgraduate Students

This 6 hour weekly course is for students who score between 31 and 59 on the EMU Proficiency Test. The course covers all the major skills from an academic perspective and is closely linked with students’ own individual academic studies. (Earlier code 503)

ENGL 515: Advanced Academic English for Postgraduate Students

This 4 hour weekly course is for students who score between 60 and 75 on the EMU Proficiency Test. In this course students develop their academic English skills further with a particular focus on the IELTS exam. (Earlier code 502)

Elective Courses

ENGL 523: Thesis Writing for Postgraduate Students

This 4 hour weekly course assists students with planning, developing and writing their thesis and helps them with producing work at an internationally publishable standard. (Earlier code 501)

ENGL 525: Advanced Presentation Skills for Postgraduate Students

This 4 hour weekly course aims at improving students’ academic speaking and presentation skills for the purpose of thesis defence, conference, and seminar presentations. (Earlier code 504)

ENGL 531: General English for KPDS / UDS I

Civic Involvement Project at School of Foreign Languages

The students worked hard all through the semester planning their projects as well as improving their English in the process.
